Explore Industrial Sewing

The We Make RI manufacturing industrial sewing program offers specialized, PAID, work training in industrial sewing. Selected candidates work Monday through Friday, 9:30 – 2:00, working on real industrial sewing machines. Participants earn a weekly stipend, which can grow with each week. Gain real world work experience to add to your resume and secure a full-time industrial sewing job at the end of the program.

  • Applicants must be RI residents 18+
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Unemployed or underemployed
  • Ready to work full-time at program completion

Schedule and Overview

Week 1

We start with the basics:

  • Threading the machine
  • Winding and threading the bobbin
  • Basic operation
  • Sewing straight and curved lines
  • Machine care
  • Basic math and measurement
  • Safety Training

 

Week 2

Training continues in week 2 with more advanced practice:

  • Review basic operations
  • Combine stitches
  • Tension adjustment
  • Operation of other industrial machines
  • New stitching techniques
  • Complete a simple project

 

Weeks 3 and 4

In the final weeks of our industrial sewing internship, visit with industrial sewing manufacturers and work on real products while increasing proficiency and speed. Complete your project and conduct your final presentation. Prior to completion, a career counselor will work with you to place in a position with one of our work partners.
